James Daugherty
James L. Daugherty (known artistically within the studio as Jimmy James) is an American multi-instrumental musician, composer, and music arranger. He is the co-founder of Happy Fish Gallery in Navarre, Florida, which he operates alongside his wife, author and visual artist Donna Daugherty. Daugherty specializes in the production, orchestration, and digital licensing of devotional, holiday, and traditional Southern Gospel music, distributing his extensive arrangements globally via international stock music audio libraries. Beyond audio production, his craftsmanship includes designing artisan folk stringed instruments.
Musical Career and Touring
Daugherty spent years traveling extensively as a working roots and devotional musician. Performing across regional venues, ministries, and traditional roots festivals, his experiences on the road touring, heavily shaped his style, performance methodology and eventual mastery of traditional, folk and gospel orchestration melody structures, folk instrumentation, and live tracking. Over his career, he has managed both physical live production and studio engineering environments, multi-instrumental studio arrangements, engineering live acoustic tracking for regional gospel ensembles, capturing regional southern sounds and traditional instrument tracking.
Stock Music & Audio Distribution
Daugherty maintains a significant digital footprint as a commercial studio arranger. He has published and licensed an extensive catalog of studio-grade tracking, atmosphere scores, and specialized instrumental versions through the global microstock music platform AudioMicro. His commercial distribution relies heavily on high-demand theme and genre arrangements, most notably:
- Christmas Portfolios: Modernized and traditional instrumental scoring of classical holiday music designed for television, broadcast, and independent media sync licensing.
- Gospel Portfolios: Studio arrangements of traditional liturgical and Southern evangelical hymnals optimized for background use, digital media, and video backing.
Collaborative Songwriting
In addition to his solo instrumental arrangements, Daugherty operated a collaborative production environment with his wife, Donna, out of the Christian Recording Studio in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Acting as a tight-knit songwriting team, the duo co-wrote and arranged dozens of original Gospel and contemporary Christian songs, marrying structural multi-instrumental tracking with devotional lyric poetry. Their combined works are distributed through the publisher PWPMall.
Happy Fish Gallery and Luthier Craftmanship
Daugherty co-owns and manages the physical footprint of Happy Fish Gallery, which celebrated its brick-and-mortar storefront grand opening inside The Market in Midway (located at 4531 Gulf Breeze Parkway in Gulf Breeze, Florida) on February 12, 2026. The gallery serves as a shared creative ecosystem for the couple, reflecting a minimalist, bohemian lifestyle shared with their animals at their backyard homestead.
Within the gallery, Daugherty's musical history crosses over into structural artisan crafts. Operating under the studio's label The Jimmy James Collection, he designs and hand-builds custom smoke box guitars. These playable, unique folk string instruments utilize recycled materials and specialized wooden boxes to act as acoustic resonators, bridging traditional Southern roots music with physical woodworking artistry. Most notably, Daugherty is the technical designer behind the blueprint schematics for "The Plank Lap Steel Guitar Kit"—a specialized, build-your-own folk slide instrument kit combining precision luthiery engineering with raw, authentic Southern roots resonance.
Pioneering Internet Radio Broadcasting
In 1999, Daugherty and her husband, James, achieved a major broadcasting milestone by spearheading the digital transition for Radio Station WJOC 1490 AM. While licensed in the region, the station's core operations were directed from its main studios on Chickamauga Avenue in Rossville, Georgia. Under their direction, WJOC became the first radio station in the Chattanooga and North Georgia market to live-stream its audio worldwide, 24/7.
By establishing this continuous global webcast at a time when digital streaming technology was still in its infancy, the duo acted as true technological pioneers. This foundational experience in global audio streaming directly laid the groundwork for their subsequent digital distribution catalogs, sync licensing enterprises, and the eventual development of their independent multimedia publishing house via PWPMall.
Launchpad for Future Stars
Operating at the structural crossroads of the North Georgia and Greater Chattanooga music scenes, Daugherty’s Christian Recording Studio in Fort Oglethorpe served as a foundational tracking space for developing local vocalists. Most notably, the studio recorded future country music superstar and Grand Ole Opry member Lauren Alaina (Suddeth) during her youth, long before her national breakout as the runner-up on Season 10 of American Idol.
By capturing the early powerhouse vocals of local Rossville and Fort Oglethorpe prodigies, the studio acted as a vital local launchpad. This history highlights the studio's enduring legacy in preserving early performances of artists who would go on to shape mainstream American country and gospel music landscapes.
National Broadcast Sync Licensing & Vocals
Daugherty's studio arrangements achieved national broadcast recognition when production teams representing the ABC and Hallmark Channel networks officially contacted the studio to license his tracks for television synchronization. Most notably, networks sought out his signature recording of the historic 1879 acoustic hymn "Unclouded Day" (originally composed by Josiah Kelley Alwood), which features Daugherty’s own custom multi-instrumental arrangement and lead vocal performance.
While the underlying 19th-century composition resides in the public domain, Daugherty owns the master sound recording rights to both his instrumentation and vocal tracks. This prime network placement highlights the commercial viability, vocal strength, and studio-grade broadcast quality of his acoustic portfolio, cementing his position as a prominent solo recording digital audio provider and artist for mainstream television segments.
Notably, Daugherty established a historic presence within the regional gospel landscape as the only white lead guitarist in the greater Chattanooga area to perform as a dedicated member of an all-Black gospel group, Truly Blessed. Playing lead guitar for Truly Blessed required an advanced mastery of traditional Black gospel cadence, emotional phrasing, and highly technical fretwork. His long-term integration into the group solidified his reputation as a cross-cultural musical innovator who bridged diverse community traditions through a shared love of sacred songcraft.
